This flinty, austere, appetite-whetting wine is made by a group of stoic, attention-shy vintners. Here they offer a rare glimpse at the simple, sturdy foods they eat at home.
Neal Martin 88? Drink: 2020
I am aware that we must not blaspheme against a great vintage like 2005 and a great winemaker like Christophe Roumier, but served blind, I must say that I was not the only one a little perplexed by the 2005 Chambolle Musigny Village. It has a monstrously backward nose of blackberry, lead and iodine scents, but the sensation is not far removed from hitting an aromatic brick wall. The palate is structured, backward and for want of a better expression, "in your face," missing the elegance and finesse one associates with Christophe's wines. Perhaps we just met at an inopportune moment, but I was surprised when the identity of the bottle was revealed. Give it 5 years in bottle and let's see.
