Terroir dominates the vintage in DRC's 2012 lineup
....Along with cellar master Bernard Noblet, we tasted through the 2012 vintage in barrel.
The mildew attacks of spring and some loss of berries from sunburn reduced the crop. This also enabled the healthy grapes (there was no rot) to ripen fully, although the team also gambled and waited an additional week to pick.
The healthy state of the grapes allowed Noblet to retain 70 percent of the stems for the fermentations and macerations, which lasted three weeks. Unfortunately, the quantity of the reds is 20 percent less than average. Montrachet, which was hit by hail, saw yields less than half those of a normal year. It had been bottled a month earlier so wasn't showing its best, but has a linear profile much like the 2010...

Whereas the 2011s were charming and easy out of barrel a year ago, they were more marked by the vintage. The 2012s show more depth and substance, with the structures to age.....
