The good news is that the reds in particular are very successful, offering ripe fruit, rich textures and fresh acidity, for balanced, juicy wines that should develop well over the next 20 to 30 years. The whites are concentrated and dense, in some cases a little heavy and plodding, a result of the low yields caused by the vintage.

The bad news is that once again, yields are down.

Executive Wine Seminars: 1994 California Cabernets--20th Anniversary Retrospective,By Howard Kaplan

Certainly our first place wine, the 1994 Joseph Phelps Insignia, ran away from the pack and was the clear winner. Insignia has a reputation for tasting great when young, as we have confirmed in countless EWS tastings over the years, but these spectacular bottles of 1994 Insignia proved that this wine can go the distance as well. Other strong performances were turned in by Opus One, Dominus, Altamura, Beringer Private Reserve and Philip Togni.

The following are consensus tasting notes, written to share commentary and descriptors, and to convey the overall impression participants had for each wine as it showed on the night of the tasting. Our ratings reflect the quality of the wines and the enthusiasm (or lack thereof) displayed by our group of 32 tasters during in-depth discussions of each wine. Ratings are also more reflective of the "here and now" than of likely future development. Wines are listed in the order in which they were poured.
