Sotheby's November wine auction includes a selection from the Estate of Robert S Pirie, one of the greatest collections of Sine Qua Non ever to be auctioned at Sotheby's, and Burgundy recently donated to the Quebec Fine-Arts Museum's Foundation. The auction features over 1000 lots and has a pre-sale estimate of $2.3 million.
Hart Davis Hart Wine Co. saw record-breaking results at its annual Celebration
of Bordeaux auction, achieving over $6.3 million in sales against presale
estimates of $4.4 - $6.7 million. Hundreds of bidders from around the globe
participated and their aggressive bids drove more than 80% of the 1992 lots to
sell above their midpoint estimates. Bidders clamored for the remarkable
treasures of this sale including the exceedingly rare case of 1982 Le Pin
magnums, which shattered the high estimate, achieving $101,575 (est.
$50,000-75,000). These robust results brought Hart Davis Hart’s 2015 live
auction sales total to an incredible $31 million to date, solidifying their
position as the largest wine auction house in the U.S.
The two-day auction featured an astounding array of Bordeaux from more than 140
châteaux spanning 62 vintages. The sale began with the most impressive array of
château-direct consignments ever to be offered at auction including parcels
from Mouton Rothschild, La Mission Haut-Brion, and—for the first time in the
estate’s lauded history—Léoville-Las-Cases. Mature vintages from these
celebrated estates achieved particularly strong results including six bottles of
1976 Château Montrose that sold for $1,553 (est. $600-900), two cases of
magnums of 2000 Château Lynch-Bages that each sold for $3,585 (est.
$2,000-3,000), and a bottle of 1959 Château Léoville-Las-Cases that sold for
$1,912 (est. $1,000-1,500). The pinnacle of the château-direct lots was a
vertical assortment of La Mission Haut-Brion which was comprised of twelve
benchmark vintages from the venerable estate: 1955, 1959, 1961, 1975, 1882,
1989, 1990, 1998, 2005, 2006, 2009, and 2010. In sum, the 24 château-direct
consignments brought in a total of $810,281 (est. $577,510-863,490).
In addition to the breathtaking assortment of wines direct from the cellars of
top Châteaux, the October auction included consignments from some of the finest
private Bordeaux collections in the world. Hart Davis Hart was honored to offer
the first installment of The Wine Collection of the Late Josue V. Harari (lots
315-611). This immaculate offering, which totaled over $751,000, was an
introduction to Mr. Harari’s impeccable collection which will continue to
be sold in the coming years. There was also vigorous competition for rarities
from other impressive private cellars including six bottles of 1982 Château
Lafleur that sold for $28,680 (est. $18,000-28,000), three bottles of 1947
Château Cheval Blanc that sold for $21,150 (est. $13,000-19,000), and three
magnums of 2000 Château Pétrus that sold for $23,900 (est. $16,000-24,000).
These strong hammer prices indicate that the Bordeaux market is on the rise in
the U.S.
